As part of the largest reorganization and renovation program ever undertaken by the University, this project included extensive structural, mechanical, electrical, fire/life safety, telecommunications, ADA, asbestos abatement and other necessary upgrades in 6 major buildings, including Ellison, Phelps, North, South, Snidecor and Girvetz Halls. One of the objectives of the program was to relocate and consolidate 23 departments into appropriate discipline areas, (or "affinity clusters,") to strengthen the quality of teaching and research programs and foster interdisciplinary collaboration.
Because no additional space was available on campus for interim faculty offices and classrooms, this 149,000 SF renovation program had to be divided into 35 distinct construction projects with 70 separate moves of building contents. Exterior work was performed during spring seasons, and interior work was accomplished during summers. The JCM Group developed highly detailed phasing and sequencing plans and schedules for inclusion in the construction bid documents, taking into account all construction work, moves, telecommunications coordination, examination week blackouts, special events, etc. By following The JCM Group's plan during construction, the contractor was able to complete the project successfully without disrupting the faculty, students or campus operations.
